so my friend and i are looking to get back into this server but for some reason we get errors everytime we try to log in as if the server is down.

I can log in so the server is not down. I have had the same issue a few months ago and I installed Tunnelbear (so you can change your IP), that worked for me but ofcourse I don't know if you're having the same problem.
You can try it and if it doesn't work, we'll have to look for another solution.
